About Unity Wildlife Management Area

Unity Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in Baker County, Oregon, encompassing wetlands, reservoir shores, and upland habitat around Unity Reservoir. This area is primarily managed for waterfowl and wildlife habitat conservation, balancing public recreational use with important breeding and resting grounds for migratory birds. The WMA covers a mix of open water, marshes, and shrub-steppe terrain that supports species such as ducks, geese, pheasants, and multiple raptor species. Historically, the site was developed in the mid-20th century alongside the construction of Unity Dam to provide irrigation water storage, with the surrounding lands set aside to protect wildlife habitat. Outdoor enthusiasts visit the area for waterfowl hunting during the fall season, as well as year-round birdwatching, fishing for trout and bass, and casual hiking along the reservoir's edges. The calm waters of Unity Reservoir also attract paddle sports enthusiasts in warmer months. The landscape includes open views of the Blue Mountains and nearby forested hills, offering scenic wildlife observation points. Despite its modest size compared to other protected areas, Unity WMA plays a vital role in sustaining local biodiversity and providing public access to outdoor recreation in a largely rural region. Visitors appreciate the area's peaceful environment and abundant wildlife, especially during migration periods.
